Communication: A skill

The following steps will confirm improved communication skills between people for whom English is their first language compared to people for whom English is a 2nd language.

Exercise patience. Do not anticipate too much too quickly as this will
cause confusion and frustration.

In the instance where certain people follow written English better than they speak it, request them to demonstrate their understanding in writing.

Avoid jokes. Humor may be misinterpreted and some people might see the joke at their expense.

Never raise your voice and speak slowly and clearly.

Written communication must be done in the “active” tense.

Determine the target audience.

The shorter the word, the wider the audience

Face to face communication should be used whenever possible this avoids misunderstanding.
